Liposuction is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure that can remove excess stubborn fat and create a smoother, more toned shape in specific areas of your body.
While conventional liposuction has proven to be very effective, continued advancements and improvements in the procedure have led to a newer and more innovative technique being used. This is called SmartLipo.
SmartLipo was first approved by the FDA in 2006 and is now widely used in plastic surgery. It differs from traditional liposuction in that, instead of using a cannula and physical manipulation to suck fat from the patient’s body, laser technology is used to soften or liquefy the fat first, which generally makes it much easier to remove.
SmartLipo can be used on virtually any area of the body, including the…
- Inner and outer thighs
- Upper arms
- Back of the neck
- Pubic mound
- Male breasts (a condition known as gynecomastia)
Benefits of SmartLipo
Over recent years, an increasing number of patients have opted for this revolutionary procedure. This is largely attributed to there being a number of advantages to choosing SmartLipo over conventional liposuction surgery. These include:
Laser technology is renowned for offering far greater accuracy and precision than can be achieved by the human hand. This reduces the risk of the wrong area being targeted and can ensure that your most bothersome stubborn fat is successfully removed.
Easier removal of fat
Since the laser softens and liquefies the fat before it is vacuumed from your body, much less suction needs to be used. This can reduce the amount of time needed for the procedure and can impact your recovery – more on that later.
Laser technology creates heat, and this can help tighten up your skin after the fat has been removed, creating a much smoother and more streamlined silhouette. This can be especially important if you are older and have skin that has lost much of its natural elasticity, or if you have lost a great deal of weight. Regular lipo doesn’t have any skin tightening effects and so many patients are left with saggy, dimpled areas after their procedure that can leave them still feeling self-conscious.
Because the fat is easier to remove from your body in a softer state, much less physical manipulation is required. This means that you will probably be in considerably less pain after the procedure than if you had conventional liposuction. You will also have less bruising and swelling.
A full recovery from regular lipo usually takes as long as six weeks and will require the use of compression garments for the duration of this time. However, the recovery from a Smart Lipo procedure is much shorter, and you can expect to make a full recovery in just a few days. Compression garments must still be worn, but only for around a week.
Laser technology is extremely safe and often poses a much lower risk to patient health than other types of treatment. Not only is it more accurate, reducing the likelihood of mistakes, it is also extremely sterile which helps protect you from post-operative infections.
Fast visualization of results
Sometimes the swelling and bruising in traditional lipo makes it difficult to see the changes to your body for a number of weeks. However, with SmartLipo you can start to see the results much more quickly as your body will not be so affected by the treatment.
Improved confidence and self-esteem
