mirconeedling While the idea of having your face pricked with tiny needles hundreds of times may sound like a mobster’s idea of interrogating an enemy, it can actually be a rewarding and wonderful experience for your face.

Microneedling 101

Microneedling also called collagen induction therapy, is a method of skin treatment that involves puncturing the top layer of skin with very fine needles. While the process doesn’t sound very fun, it is actually almost completely painless and works incredibly well to rejuvenate the skin and reverse some of the telltale signs of aging.

Microneedling simulates hundreds of minor injuries to the skin. This triggers your body’s natural healing process and increases the production of collagen and elastin. Increases in collagen and elastin help to revive the skin and smooth fine and even deep wrinkles. After just a few sessions of microneedling, patients (and their friends!) can notice a significant reduction in the appearance of crows feet and deep lines in the forehead.

Many patients and physicians prefer microneedling because there is no need to inject a foreign substance, the process is fast and virtually painless, and there is almost no downtime associated with the process. Utilizing the body’s own natural healing process to reduce signs of aging also decreases the potential of negative side effects.

Not Just for Wrinkles

A study that was conducted in 2009 found that microneedling also helped nearly 100 percent of the patients undergoing treatment see noticeable decreases in acne scarring. Patients who have moderate scarring can even see significant improvements in the appearance of scars when they work with a professional.

While microneedling sees about the same level of results as laser treatments, a recent study suggested that microneedling was the better option because it also had less recovery time and fewer side effects than reported by laser treatments.

In addition to helping with acne scarring, microneedling can also help reduce the appearance of discoloration or sun damage.

Microneedling to Shrink Pores

While you might think that using superfine needles to put additional holes into your facial tissue would actually increase pore size, you would be wrong. Doctors have found that the increase in collagen production helps to plump and revitalize the skin around the pores helping to give them the appearance of being smaller.

It Helps Your Skin Products

In addition to helping with scarring, wrinkles, discoloration, and visible aging, microneedling has also been found to improve the ability of your skin to absorb your facial products. This means that in addition to the amazing results that microneedling provides, that you can then piggyback the effectiveness of other treatments or medications that are applied to the skin.

Not Just for the Face

While many patients use microneedling on their face, the process can actually be applied in many places all over the body. The process is the same, increased collagen production to reduce many of the blemishes that we would all rather hide with our clothes. However, now you can wear the swimsuit to the beach that you’ve always wanted, or wear the strapless gown on a romantic date. Who would have thought that a simple process could be so beneficial in so many different areas?
